Viscount Solar have a wealth of knowledge and experience of installing Solar PV systems into homes and businesses throughout the UK.
What is PV Solar and how does it work?
PV Solar refers to photovoltaic (solar) panel systems, which convert daylight into electricity using layers of semi-conducting materials. When exposed to natural daylight the panel produces a direct electrical current (DC), which is converted in to mains compatible alternating electrical current (AC) by an inverter. This AC electricity can then be used to power your household appliances via your existing wiring or be fed back to the National Grid. Contrary to popular belief, PV panels work in winter and on cloudy days, although it is fair to say that the higher the daylight intensity, the greater the yield of electricity they will produce.
What are the benefits and costs?
Each PV Solar System is tailored to your specific requirements, such as energy demands and location, so costs can vary. A full comprehensive quote will be provided to you at the initial survey.
What is the FiT (Feed In Tariff) and how does it work?
The Government has mandated that electricity suppliers must pay you for each unit of solar electricity generated PLUS a further payment for every unit exported to the National Grid. These rates are guaranteed for 25 years and are index linked, so you have security of your income as well as free energy during daylight hours. If you installed a typical 3kWp solar PV system the FiT would generate the following income: £540 per year tax-free from the generation tariff, £40 per year from the export tariff and £170 per year from the reduction in current electricity bills, which equates to £750 total income per year.
How much money will my investment in PV Solar make?
Typically a return of between 7% and 10% can be expected on your investment year-on-year. A financial model will be prepared for you as part of your estimate, giving anticipated figures for your particular property.
How will it affect the value of my property?
The addition of PV Solar Panels will obviously enhance the appeal of your property and make it more saleable, though it is almost impossible to attach an actual figure to this. Personal ethics, a desire to have a positive impact on the planet and the opportunity for free electricity all affect the way we each consider the value that a PV system will bring.
Is a PV Solar System suitable for my property and where should a PV array be sited?
Ideally a PV Solar Panel System should be sited on a south facing roof or ground mounted support system at a 30°to 40° pitch. However, an east or west facing array can also have up to 85% optimal performance. The size of the PV system will be tailored to suit your needs.
Do I need planning permission for my Solar PV System?
In most regions, PV panel systems are viewed as ‘permitted development’ items that require no planning authority approval, so long as they are installed within certain guidelines. However, regardless of whether your local authority see these as ’permitted developments’ or not, we will deal with the local planning authority on your behalf, obtaining written approval (where applicable) before we commence any works.
